Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question certain rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
